I won 'The Slave' in the Goodreads giveaway. Before I get anyone upset, I want to point out that I am talking about the book by Anand Dilvar. According to the bright red sign on the front it sold 1.8 million copies. Successful authors are entitled to their bragging rights, but I always try to not let that influence or cloud my judgment as I read the material. One best seller had close to 2000 'likes', mine included, for a rather caustic review on Goodreads. You can't please everybody. This was m..more

This book is way out of my comfort zone and not at all like anything I would normally read, but when I was approached about receiving a copy I was intrigued. It’s s short read, but it packs an almighty punch and definitely forces you to think on a deep level. Oct 01, 2017Myra rated it liked it · review of another edition
The concept is fairly simple as is the writing style, where this shines is in it’s message. An unnamed man, The Slave, is in a coma where he can’t move but he can hear, see and knows exactly what is going on around him. This could be conside..more

This little book has a unique way of showing its readers that life should not be taken for granted. While an okay read, it didn't provide any new information for me. Perhaps because I've read many self-help books in the past. It's a fast read for those that may be interested.
i wish i could give this book a billion stars..this is a life changing book!

Sooooo, I read The Slave and I rolled my eyes so hard I think I saw the back of my skull. Why do people keep publishing books telling others to accept reality and take responsibility for their own actions and emotions, while pretending this is some new ground-breaking idea? I'm pretty sure Lao Tzu said it in the 6th century (BCE). And it probably wasn't even a new idea when he decided to write it down!
The writing is stiff and there are several inconsistencies. For example, the unnamed protagonis..more

I thought I would not like this book, I mean the main character is in a coma, but it was different then what I expected. Laying in bed for 9 months in a coma but being able to see what's going on and hear your family's voice and not being able to respond , must be terrifying. But there is more, so much more, a baby on the way, a wife, parents, siblings, pouring their hearts out.
The things this man overhears could turn your blood cold, but being in a coma so long teaches him forgiveness. I don't..more

This is the Spanish to English translation of the book so I'll tell you some of the phrasing used in the book doesn't feel as natural as it maybe would in Spanish, but don't let that deter you from this. This is so well written that I often wondered if it was a true story, to be able to get into the mind of a young man in a vegetative state is kind of unbelievable. We have a young man, The Slave, who we first meet by learning he's in this state, the morning light is blinding him but he cannot bl..more

This book wasn't what I expected. I thought it was going to be some mystical jargon but it really made me reflect on what is the main thing. Once I got into it, I couldn't put it down until I finished it. My take away from the book is let the anger go. Some of it made me cringe though but it was overall impacting. Everybody is a product of their raising and each generation is impacted by the prior. When I read this again, I am sure I'll see something different. I won this book in a goodreads giv..more

An absolutely stunning novel that I was fortunate enough to have an English ARC of.
Normally I don't advocate reading any novel more than once, but this is one of those rare books one should reread every year to soak in the messages that this novel brings forth. I sit here amazed after reading this in one evening at my kitchen island. Grateful that this was translated into English so beautifully. I cried and hoped for the main character while absorbing and taking notes on all the little quotes I f..more

A parable about freedom, choice, and responsibility. Rather than being set in some fantastical place or alternative culture, its ostensible setting is a modern hospital room. On the one hand, you almost slip into reading it as a real story rather than a parable; alternatively, it is easier to relate to because it is familiar.

I first read this book in November of 2017 and decided to read the book again today as we go into 2018. What influenced me to do this again was the song Auld Lang Syne. I thought of the line 'Should auld acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind?' I thought of the main character in this short philosophical novel The Slave as he is trapped in a vegetative state and remembering his past.
Through his vegetative state, he learns through a spiritual guide about lessons in life. How to overcome..more

An amazing book! A small book in size (127 pages) but large in contents. Life is an amazing gift, life is a miracle and love and connecting with others is the most important thing. Sounds pretty simple but easy to forget when you get caught up in your everyday life. I like how this book is written in a story format. Imagine you wake up and find out you are in a coma but can hear everything around you. Also your eyelids won't close, so you can also see everything. You then start having conversati..more

I received this book for free from Goodreads.
I was fascinated with the authors experience being in a vegetative state and everyone around him didn’t know that he could see and hear them. However, the conversations that he was having with himself (his “guide”) was like a much shorter and less in depth version of a book that I had to read for an Ethics class – Conversations With God by Neale Donald Walsch – which I suffered through in order to finish the class. Short book, not a lot of details, li..more

This is a Goodreads win review. This author is trapped in a vegetative state after an accident. This is a very insightful book. This book is about overcoming the things that trouble you and let those things loose. It is also about quit waiting for your life to be perfect before you enjoy it because perfect does not happen. So be alive and active and alive now. And find your purpose in life to have a rewarding life.

Thanks to Goodreads for this giveaway ARC. I had high hopes from the description, but was left feeling flat, and struggled through most of the book. The idea is there, but the writing was too simplistic with most of the character development happening behind the scenes.

I won an arc of The Slave on a Goodreads giveaway. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
At first glance, it seems to be a very simple book. And it is. About a man who is in a coma and learns how fortunate he was until he lost everything. But the book doesn't talk about that. It speaks of life, how you are much more in control than you previously thought, and what to cherish most in your own life. I think that people need to read this book maybe once in their lives. Originally published in Spanish as El Esclavo, this English translation is set for publication in January 2018. The Slave, our narrator, finds himself in a coma after an accident. Trapped within his mind, unable to move or blink after a debilitating accident, he endures a range of emotions, eventually discovering a guide within himself. Though the plot may sound similar to Johnny Got His Gun, it is quite a different tale.
This book is on the unobtrusive end of self-help books. The idea is that th..more

This is a short story hidden within a self-help book. The story itself was not that interesting. It was hard to get to know the characters and empathize with the situation they were in giving so few pages to develop the story. However, the focus of this book is on the insightful advice given by the guide. These are the life lessons that anyone can benefit from reading. It is timeless knowledge. It may be useful to read this book again as a reminder to grasp the message the book was portraying.

This very short book can easily be read in one sitting. The 'slave' is a young man who was involved in an accident and is in a coma although he can hear the conversations around him. He is visited by a spiritual guide, a voice he hears that talks to him about his life, his choices, what he controls, gratitude, forgiving himself and others. These concepts have been presented in many different writings over the centuries although it doesn't hurt to hear these again. I think this book would be most..more

Full disclosure: I won this book in a Goodreads Giveaway, but the opinions in this review are unbiased and mine. This book was a quick read, simply because I could not put it down. The theme of the book rang true and clear: we are the masters of our feelings and how we respond to any given situation presented in our life. It has taken me a long life to learn this principle in my own school of hard knocks. The book reminded me of another book I love, 'The Shack'. The only criticism I might offer..more

This has some powerful messages for such a short little book. Personally, I felt it was a little too short. I would've liked some more debate, explanation for some of the messages, because they're not things that'll just change your life if you hear it once. You have to be convinced, and believe it. I don't think this book did a good job of that. It 'convinced' me to where I 'believed' it because it sounds good, sounds right, but not to where I was thinking about it past when I finished reading..more

I received a free ARC of this book. The premise of the book really intrigued me. I had read a similar book a month ago called Ghost Boy by Martin Pistorius, a true story based on Martin’s own experience of waking of from a vegetative state and not being able to move or communicate with anyone.
The Slave however was different. Although a young man woke up in a similar vegetative state and was unable to communicate with his family or Doctors, he does spend time talking to a “Guide” who teaches him..more

Very interesting perspective and read. Take an hour out of your life and think about what this author is presenting in this short book! About half way through, I had a feeling how it was going to end and it did play out that way. That did not diminish the lesson it was conveying.
